I think this is a love song of sorts.

Think of all the times you’ve done something for someone, in the hope, that it would make them notice you. That desperate want for them to know and understand you.

‘Always looking down at all I see’
Could mean, depressed and down, not confident enough to lift his head up.
Or could mean, when he is singing up on stage looking out at his fans, he sometimes feels lonely.

‘You know that I could use somebody’
Think about a time when you were lost with not knowing what to do next. In a troubled situation and you thought about how you could have used somebody’s help or guidance.

Perhaps that’s why the words in the intro & chorus, are just oh’s and aw’s, it’s a yell of desperate yearning.

Perhaps he thinks that this person could help him to connect. That with ‘all they know’ and ‘how they speak’ they might be able to help him fit in.

‘Off in the night while you live it up, i’m off to sleep
waging war to shake the poet and the beat’

Perhaps while his lady (or imaginary somebody) is out living it up, he’s just trying to get some sleep getting ready for the next concert. Waging war, there is a war in his head and he’s trying not to let the musician in him keep him up. Writing lyrics is sometimes referred to as a type of poetry and music as rhythm and beats.

I think its sort of an American Indian song, based on the fact of the lyrics “painted faces”. He says “painted faces I can’t reach”, I think it means even though he wants to help the natives, he can’t get close to them. And While “you” means someone who does harm to the natives, “someone” or “somebody” might be who can get close to the natives to help them. The lyrics “while you live it up i’m off to sleep” might mean when “you” go and do harm (maybe even kill) the indians, I’m running away and try not to notice it. And he is “looking down” and seeing all of what’s left of the native tribes. Maybe the band was feeling sort of guilty for natives who were cast off by their people.

I do love this song. Not a big fan of the group either. It is my theme song since I first heard it. It is simply talking about the basic need of having somebody around. Hopefully, to fall in love, too.
