This was a cover done by the 80′s group, simply red. I think it is talking quite simply about if you don’t know somebody maybe you never will. At some point in a relationship of any sort,you eventually begin to know somebody better.

“If You Don’t Know Me By Now” is a song written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huffand recorded by the Philadephia Soul Musical group Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Which became their first hit after being released as a single in 1972, topping the R&B charts and peaking at number three on the pop charts. It was covered by Simply Red in 1988, and became a worldwide hit reaching mumber one on the U.S. Hot 100 on July 15, 1989 and peaking at number two in the U.K. singles chart. It also topped the Canadian Singles Chart.
